The Nurse Anesthesiology Resident Association (NARA) was established in 1981, originally founded as the New England Association of Student Nurse Anesthetists (NEASRNA). Its founder and first Chairman, Bill Evans, was a student at the Pawtucket Memorial Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program in Rhode Island. The organization was created to provide a unified voice for student nurse anesthetists and representation within the New England Assembly of School Faculty (NEASF).
Since its founding, NARA has grown into a national organization representing Resident Registered Nurse Anesthetists (RRNAs) across the United States, serving as a student counterpart to the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA). NARA serves to support and advocate for resident interests, promotes professional development, and foster engagement within the nurse anesthesia community.
NARA serves as a vehicle for anesthesia students in all regions to assemble and exchange ideas of common concern. It serves as a communication link between the student body and school faculty.
The assembly assists students in gaining insight and experience in the following areas:
Collegial networks
Faculty and student communication
Group processes, role responsibility and leadership
National and professional issues, lobbying activities
Professional commitment and participation
Continuing education
Community outreach
